Molly Smith was born in Victoria, Texas, in 1952, and is a fourth-generation Texan. Her artistic sensibility was shaped by an early enduring connection to the natural world. Growing up in a small Texas town, she spend her childhood exploring the surrounding countryside, family farmland, friends' ranches, and the Texas coast. These formative experiences fostered a deep appreciation for nature that continues to inform her artistic practice.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Denver and moved to Austin, Texas, in 1974. She began her professional career in art, graphic design, and interior design, exhibiting her work in exhibitions throughout Texas.

In 1979, Smith founded Paper Place, an Austin stationery store that she owned and operated for 38 years. Following her retirement in 2018, she returned to painting and drawing, renewing her commitment to artistic exploration and creative expression.

Rooted in a lifelong engagement with the Texas landscape, Smith’s artistic practice reflects a sustained interest in the forms, patterns, and visual complexity of the natural world.
