About the artist...

Sarah Stellman

My paintings consist of collections of meaningful objects within manipulated spaces. Sentimentality, and the subjective distortion of recollected images influence the way I collage objects and spaces together to create what I think of as mental landscapes, in which I hope a narrative can unfold. Each painting is constructed using remembered images and objects, their physical forms, and my emotional connections to them as a basis for which I manipulate and paste objects on top of each other. The way an object is placed in association to others, how literal it is, and its visual weight are all ways that I want to communicate a figurative network of inanimate but meaningful objects with their own meaningful associations. I like the idea that a painting can capture an intangible network of feelings towards physical and remembered objects and spaces.
