Read the March 2012 review by The Austin Chronicle here. Known for her luscious paint quality and psychologically investigative subject matter, Jennifer Balkan’s most recent body of work explores our culture’s current phenomenon of turning the private public. Her paintings, like the circles repeated within them, act as lenses into moments that once were personal but that are now commonplace in the public-sphere today, bringing the evolution of our interpersonal behavior to the forefront. Before becoming a full-time painter in 2002, Jennifer Balkan studied behavioral neuroscience at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and received her Ph. D in Sociology from the University of Texas. Her formal education has a profound impact on her painting, as she continues to explore the human psyche both psychologically and sociologically through the 2-dimensional. Jennifer is in New American Paintings, vol. 72, available in bookstores around the country. web site: www.jenniferbalkan.net |
