Traveling with paints is my way of getting to know a culture, at least visually. France, especially Provence, is to me an exciting place to paint due to the great artists who made their mark there. As I painted in the old villages and fields of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and countless others, I had the most humble feelings about being in these sacred art spaces. I knew somehow they were watching me, invading their special pleinair spots, and I tried to paint with the passion they must have had. The only French language I knew was at the end of a paint brush. The people I met along the way seemed to accept that and understand what I was doing. They smiled and watched; enjoying my visual celebration of their art heritage.

I also enjoy painting where I live, the Texas Hill Country. The vast landscape never ceases to inspire.
